Digital Tools
Genuine Fractals 2.0
This software Plug-In for Adobe PhotoShop is probably a must for most digital photographers. It provides for compressed storage of digital images and then restoration on demand in a lossless format. The restoration process allows you to resize and specify the image's DPI upon opening. You can open smaller or larger, with identical or reduced resolution. It's compressed storage mode, typically reduces my TIFF images by 75% or from 9.3MB to 2.4MB.
The capability to resize images upon opening is one of its best features. I've scanned in 7" x 9" magazine images at 300 DPI, saved them in STN format, then reopened them at 300 DPI in A3 size, 13" X 17", with excellent preservation of image details. The company says their sweet spot is 4X englargement.
The software's secret seems to be converting the images to math formulas represented by Fractal Mathematics. Basically the poor man's version of one of NASA's image enhancement tools.
I will warn you that you need a lot of memory and computer power to enlarge these images.   www.altamira-group.com
